How do you guys memorize all this stuff???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ye there is a huge amount of info but what i did was i read through the kaplan blue book for a general amount of knowledge and then i went straight into practicing the destroyer and that helped me achieve a 20 on the DAT bio.

What I've always noticed is that starting in high school through college I've seen the same biology related classes over and over and over again. How many times have you all had to memorize the krebs cycle? or learn DNA replication or transcription? I know for me its been at least 4 times(probably more) through out all these science classes. That being sad, when I went to go study it for the DAT it wasn't like it was completely new material, but I already had the concept established in my head. Sometimes I wonder if i just memorized it the first time around instead of "cram and flush"-ing everytime maybe it would be easier lol.

How do you guys memorize all the bio? theres sooooo much info to remember. any advice please. thanx

Write out notecards...then go over them constantly (kind of like quizzing yourself) until you dont get one wrong. Re-write the ones that you have trouble with. Also helps to try to understand at least some of whats going on. A lot of the things make sense if you can put a reasoning behind it (although I know thats not possible for everything).

For the notecards...just take things from whatever DAT study materials you have. Kaplan Bluebook is a good place to start and then work from there.

Memorization buddy. There is no way around it. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and get dirty.

Notecards work best for ochem and bio. Do as many problems as you can for ochem and gchem. The formula is simple...you just need the discipline to execute.

Good luck!

read, and reread:

cliffs AP bio, EK bio, Destroyer, Kaplan(make notes from this), EK chem, EK orgo

don't memorize things, try to learn them. There's a big difference. Sounds weird, but once you apply the concepts enough you'll understand.

talk about it in your daily life...today at dinner, i told my family:
1)Mastication causes bolus and salivary amylase is breaking down starches.
2) As it enters the pharynx, the epiglottis opens and the bolus travels through the glottis to the esophagus.
3)The rhythmic motion of the food traveling down is peristalsis.
4)We are now in the stomach, HCl pH of 2, mucus on walls to prevent self digestion, chyme, yadda yadda yadda, you get the point!!!

I agree, but memorization and comprehension always seem to compliment one another (at least for me).

I always thought of it like this...understanding something is great and recommended...but what good is it going to do you on the test if you forget it the next day?

Go for comprehension first...then commit to memory. That's my approach.

Is it necessary to memorize every diagram in Kaplan? So far I've read the Bio and Gen Chem sections of Kaplan for understanding to get the concepts down. I know I'll have to memorize the equations in the Gen Chem sections, but is it necessary to memorize all the parts of the diagrams for the Bio section?

Hey El Sol, I don't really think you have to memorize the equations in the gchem section. Instead...just work the Destroyer problems. Once you get to the point where you can do all the problems inside and out, you will have memorized all needed gchem equations! That is all you need for gchem equations.

If you still don't feel comfortable w/ that approach...learn new equations, but always do a few practice problems w/ that equation. It makes no sense to memorize an equation w/o the appropriate practice problems.

For the kaplan bio section...I found that memorizing what was in Destroyer and Achiever was more important. Go w/ AP bio for a better outline of biology. The diagrams are much better, and furthermore, each section is just downright better.

Thanks for the suggestions poc I really appreciate it. I have ~5.5 weeks left of prep (Aug 18th DAT) and am wondering if I have been approaching this wrong. I have been spending the last 3 weeks on Kaplan Blue Book and haven't even touched DAT Destroyer. I still have to go over the OChem section. Should I just set Kaplan aside and spend the rest of my time on Destroyer and look up stuff in Kaplan or textbooks as needed to answer questions out of Destroyer?

It really depends how comfortable you feel with the material. Use the blue book as a general review. If you don't understand most of the book you might find yourself getting frustrated with the Destroyer. I would use the Destroyer to fill in any missed concepts you might have and not as a supplement to your blue book studying. I think the blue book is great...I know many would disagree so that's just my two cents...gluck! 🙂

3 weeks? I think you've spent enough time on the Kaplan Blue book. Start cranking out problems. I think it is so important to get through as many problems as you can. On the real test you will be faced w/ problems and you will have to know how to apply information in clutch situations.

You are ready to hit destroyer! Go through Destroyer and Achiever multiple times...refer to your textbooks and make notes of anything you don't understand. Keep doing this...and memorize as you go along!

That is what I did for the sciences and I'd say it worked out pretty well!
