How do you know if you will need extra time beyond 4 wks to study for step 1?

I'd really appreciate peoples advice on this matter as I have the option of delaying step 1 by taking my first island block as vacation. What do you all think about this? We have 2 vacation months and so by taking one month to study for boards I would be losing the opportunity to take an elective. However, I have no idea if 4 weeks is enough or whether I will "need" it.

I haven't been an honors student in med school and definitely struggle with the memorization aspect of it. I feel like I have such a short term memory but with review, it all comes back to me. I know I'm not the type of person that crams well at all - some people have told me they spent the last week memorzing first aid (there is no way I would be able to do that).

Its very hard to judge and would like to hear others opinions about the pros/cons/experiences.

I'm assuming that most people take it within the designated 4 weeks but what % of patients take an extra elective month to study? Any other opinions about this?

Personally I don't think any US student fresh out of 2 years of preclinicals should cram for over 4 weeks - especially if you find some time to do some slow and steady review now. How would you plan on employing this extra month?

And if you do use up your vacation to study, realize that you are looking at three years straight of school and rotations without rest (fourth year "vacation" for interviews).

Your sanity and rotation performance are more valuable than a questionable increase in a step 1 grade.

we get 6 weeks. I am taking 3.5 weeks to study so i get 2.5 off. I know i need the break. If I were in your shoes, I'd take 6 to study 2 for break. Plus if you start getting your study plans down now, maybe a quick pass over first aid, a handful of questions the 6 weeks can be super productive. Just my opinion,
