How do you know if you've been rejected pre-interview?

Hey all!
Just curious to know how applicants know if they've been rejected right off the bat. Do you just realize as the months pass you haven't received an interview invite, or do you receive a formal email that you haven't been selected for an interview? Does it differ by school?

Most schools, sometime late in the season, will send you a notice saying you were not selected for interview. Very few won't.
