Unlike your typical college student, I do not go to a university with an active social life. I know one top student here who usually does not interact with many people and one time when we talked he talked about how miserable he was at this university.
I live at home and my parents and I live in a community full of retried people since this is basically the only safe community in the whole county (crime in this county is pretty high). Most kids at my university only stick with their high school friends (since our university mainly attracts local kids), the few dorms here are reserved for out of state students or out of city students, and I am really miserable here. I have tried to reach out and make friends but usually kids give you a cold shoulder and don't want a thing to do with you.
On weekends I rarely have the opportunity to interact with the few friends I have met since they live about a half an hour away from me (in a safer county which is also richer). Usually my friends are busy on weekends with their neighborhood friends and the university is almost always empty on weekends.
Quite a few students in my classes are above 25 and it is not like most students here are the ages 18-22.
You would ask how this interferes with my academic life and I will tell you that right now.
I am an 18 year old kid about to be 19 in a few more months. I finished my first year of college with a C average (C's in both gen chems and a math class). Whenever I sit down to study, I study for 20 minutes but nearly daily I just think to myself, "is this it?". The high school I went to was rather small (around 300 students) and I did now have much of a chance of a social life. I finished there with a B average (strong upward trends in grades) but most kids there were really close minded so even if I tried I rarely made any friends.
I have not had the opportunity to pursue an active social life and usually the lack of a "life" has made me a little depressed. I just cannot focus on my school work. Plan was to transfer but my GPA now is a 2.9 after my first year, I doubt I could get in anywhere decent.
What can I do?
