Most hospitals have policies where you must wear the scrubs they provide inside the OR. As for white coats, they are not allowed in the OR area, and the hospital usually provides white coats for patient exams.

I was a nurse in my "previous life" before med school, and it always amazed me how many surgeons did not use face shields, especially in traumas and when putting in and taking out central lines. Use one! I have seen two surgeons get splattered in the eyes by an HIV + patient's blood when pulling out a IJ, they were fine but had to go on PEP and the whole nine. Yuck!
