My brother recently developed a nasty staph infection which I guessed at first glance. Unfortanetly, the doctors waited for 3 days to take a culture while the infection progessed rather quickly. They have asperated the wound and he is feeling alot a better. His elbow, which was previously swollen to the size of a large grapefruit, has gone down significantly but his hand is now a little swollen and the redness has progressed up to his elbow and down into his hand. He is currently on Bactrim DS BID and Keflex QID. I know it is jumping a long distance to saying that the infection is MERSA and he is not exhibiting extreme fatigue, high fever anymore, and any indictation of an infection that is any further systemic. However, worst case scenerio how would a MERSA infection be treated? Any help would be appreciated. This is way more stressful then getting into pharmacy school. Haha.

Thanks,
Hoss

Bactrim might help if its not resistant to it. They might throw something like Zyvox or Cubicin at him. I'm sure the physician knows what to do. Expect this thread to close though because we're not supposed to give out medical advice.

Also, Mersa is a car. MRSA is a bug....

Yep - the thread will close soon.

But, if the physician aspirated, the fluid was sent for c&s, which will take a few days.

Once they have those results, they'll change the drugs or stay on the same.

btw...form these kinds of questions more anymously & you'll have better luck with an answer rather than a thread closure.
