How are their hours compared to those in private practice? I know that they make less money, but how much less? (particularly in the surgical subspecialties) Also, do they usually do or have to do research? If so, is an MD/PhD a huge advantage when it comes time to look for a job?

Lots of questions, but general answers would be appreciated.
Thanks.

shameless bump... I know this is sort of a weird question, but this seems like the best place to put it.

Good question . . .

I've been thinking a lot lately that academic medicine probably isn't the environment for me. I feel like in academic medicine there will always be someone looking over my shoulder telling me to do more of this, less of that, particularly with regards to research and publishing. I'm much too independent for that.

I would love to hear more from those who have experience in the non-academic world, as I have none.
