Are you ranked by your percentage in each course or simply by a gpa number assigned to each grade bracket (e.g. a 71% pass in gross anatomy has the same effect on class rank as a 89% pass)?

I'm pretty sure at my school they just make h a 4.0 and P a 3.0 or 2.0 (I think 3.0, but not 100% - no HP here) then add that in with the preclinicals which are on the A, B, C scale.

What I'm curious about is the fact that they're are going to, or already did, switch to a simply P/F preclinicals. I wonder if your class rank won't start until third year or if you'll actuall keep getting grades behind the scenes......

We recently implemented a P/F system for our preclinical years, but our grades still count towards our class rank. Although our transcripts will only show P or F, our number grades out of 100 still gets recorded behind the scenes. In some ways this makes classes even more competitive. Under the older system and 91 and a 99 were both Honors and got weighted the same where as a 91 and 89 were not. Now students actually get credit for their 99 when compared to someone with a 91.

I was hoping for a true P/F system where first year grades don't count at all, but we kinda got the opposite.

Sounds like trouble.

My school is H/P/F. That is all that is recorded on a transcript. However for AOA, and Dean's Letter purposes we are all stratified, so that there is "technically" a class rank. Supposedly, the most we will ever know about our rank and other's rank is if we are in the top 10% of the class or not.

This is very school dependent. I recommend emailing your administration and asking. Every school is different. I was curious at my H/NH/P/F school and they were very forthcoming with the information.

Ours isn't P/F but we have ABCF system (no D's).

From what I understand no numeric score is kept. A=3 points B=2 points and so on... therefore we'll never have a number rank in the class, just a relative position given as a percentile (top quartile, top half, 3rd quartile, and 4th quartile)...

Honors (90-100%)
Pass (70-90)
Fail

Transcript shows H/P/F but no percentage. If you want you can get class rank (which at that time shows the overall % but not class individual)
