Does being #1 in your class for preclinical mean anything to PDs?

Recently found out I was ranked #1 in my med school class for M1/2. Will get some $ and a small blurb on my MSPE ab it. My understanding is really no one cares about preclinical tho and doing well essentially helps prepare for step2. Is this just something cool to have but has no weight? I've always wondered how scored Step1 that encompassed preclinical knowledge went from most valuable thing to meaningless.

by itself doesn’t mean much. But since this means you’re probably teed up to be near the top in clinical years, honor most rotations, do well on step 2, and get junior AOA, it’s definitely a good omen that you’re going to be a very strong applicant.

But yeah, if you have a massive brain fart and start bombing everything, this stripe on the MSPE won’t make up for it.

Congratulations and It isn't meaningless. Being #1 in M1 and M2 means you will do well on shelf exams and clinical rotations, Step2 (>265), more than likely get AOA and/or GHHS. You will do very well in the match if you continue the momentum. No need to be #1 with everything. Just be near the top and you are golden.

Ok this is what I surmised. Yes, that has been the case so far with clinicals in terms of shelf exams although my school is only P/F so cant get honors. Hopefully holds true for Step2.

Everything counts. How much it counts will depend upon programs. It certainly can't hurt.

This is definitely a big deal. As long as you keep things going well during your clinical years, this will put you in great shape for AOA. Which will translate into an easier time matching into the top residencies.

Clinical years can be tough. Don't screw things up. Be humble, don't brag, and keep doing what you're doing. You're going to be a great doctor.

You have increadible brain power. If you have the personality and charisma to accompany your intellect, you will be cream of the crop in clinicals and with Steps. Keep doing what you are doing and residency matching will be extremely fun and rewarding for you.

This is great to hear. Especially after a long day of feeling like I know nothing in the OR and feeling overwhelmed with balancing research responsibilities during surgery clerkship hours.

I mean I'm not the guy who will be singing karaoke at the holiday party but i think im at least normal so hopefully thats enough. My research is not at the same level as test scores for competitive specialties so thats why im hoping stuff like this has a little weight. My research isnt 0 or even "bad" but i wont have 10 first author pubs which seems like every one else has these days.
