How does dental volunteering abroad count?!

Hey guys,

I am a junior applying this rotation, and recently found out I will be going with a dental team to Haiti to do volunteer work for my spring break. I'll be shadowing him and assisting with the instruments and whatever else they need. I have about ~120 hours shadowing in a different office already, and I don't know if this would count as volunteer work and shadowing, or just volunteer work. I have a good amount of community service already and don't know how to address this. I know regardless it will be an incredible trip, but I hope to have some clarification.

Thanks.

Wow, this sounds awesome! Hope you have a good time 😀

Is the dental team licensed DDS/DMD professionals? Then it could count as both. However on the AADSAS, you can only identify it as one. I would put dental shadowing.

Also, when you are there, DO NOT operate on the patient whatsoever. Even if the doctor says you can, DON'T do it. If you are a certified dental assistant, then it's fine to assist the doc.

Have fun

You can list it as both job shadowing and volunteering on AADSAS. I did that this past application cycle. So to clarify for the OP, in my opinion and from personal experience, I would list this under the "dentistry/shadowing experience" as BOTH shadowing and volunteer.
