I'm at an undergrad university that is known for grade deflation. With that being said this semester in Chem 101 I will probably be getting a C. So I was thinking about reatking the class over the summer. So how does that work... I eventually want to apply to an MD school. I know I don't want a a DO. So if I reatke the class is the original grade "forgotten" about? Or is it still averaged in?

Idealy I would eventually like to retake all these classes....

So far my semester is looking like:
Chem 101: C or C-
Bio 107: B
Writing 100: C+
Psych: C

And if I do retake a class is it best to take it at my orginal university or just at a community college?

I don't think you should retake a class you did poorly in at a CC. Just think about it. Seems to me that you'd be taking the easy way out. If you want to retake, take it at a 4-year U. Also, don't retake a B. Just don't. It's not worth it.

You won't be a DO or an MD with those grades. Identify the problem that is causing you such bad grades first....it's probably not the school being tough.

Damn Hitler Cheer the hell up! I agree but you could have said it a little nicer

I agree that you probably need to evaluate why you are getting these grades before you embark on retaking a semester worth of courses

I'm not sure how your school records "retakes" but at my school they do not do any grade replacements similarly to AMCAS...w/ a C- and an A retake you would be at a 2.85 for that class

Well it's my first semester... all the distractions and extra-ciriculars....
Also not to mention I go to a university that is knwon for grade deflation...

No body gives a **** about this part, because for the most part its bull****. And furthermore, I think its great you want to learn and become a doctor but don't make excuses because of your screw up, plenty of people have more on their plate and make better grades then you.

Cooper- Call me a Nazi, haha

....you're not the exception, but there are people making As at your university and others with "grade deflation"

Although they are much more blunt about it, what the other posters have said is correct. You don't have to be perfect to get accepted to med school but there are individuals in all of those classes making straight As. So instead of making excuses use this time to figure out how you can turn things around NOW rather than later. GPAs are hard to bring up...fix things now before you are forced to deal with that reality. Also you might want to consider withdrawing from a course and retaking later if you find yourself in a similar situation sometime in the future (something I didn't do that I wish I had...).

is it true that MD school doesn't do grade replacement? if not, then how do they figure in the classes that you DID retake already??

If it's early in you undergrad, you should move on and do well in everything else. Showing progression is a good thing, just don't dig a hole like me or some others. If you have a good reason for why you made the C explain it.
