wow this is so strage, I also had that similar question right now... I need to take an english course and was wondering if I could take it through Athabasca University? I need a letter of permission so it corresponds with my school's english equivalent but was wondering what Dental schools think?

What english course should I take???

If you take it from the school you currently go to....I don't think they could tell.

honestly, it looks very bad...straight up

If you're shooting for your state school, then I guess it would be ~iffy. Next year's application cycle is going to be one of the toughest in a trend that started since 2003.

Maximize your chance of being competitive against other applicants who will have actually taken a real live course.

you're just looking for the easiest way to get in hahah 👍

american pie, it might have been okay if you were just taking this one online course. my sister is taking an online course from some random state because it isn't offered at any university here in texas. so she had no choice. you could have used a similar excuse, however, you are also taking other easy classes like band and trig. my friend, there is no real easy way into dental school and you are just going to hurt yourself in the long run. they will see all your easy classes on your transcript, and they will know what you've been up to.

usually people take easy classes when they know they've already been accepted into dental school, not BEFORE hand. this way, they can just pass their classes with a C and celebrate their acceptance. if you somehow manage not to get into dental school, heaven forbid, then what would you do? you'll be stuck with all these easy classes that didn't help you. don't take this the wrong way. i did take some easy classes too. in fact my last year, i took 2 bio classes for non biology majors. BUT, i did take 15 hours of upper level biology courses each semester to go along with them.

don't make it a habit of taking easy classes and praying you'll get accepted. it might not turn out the way you had intended.

I contacted about 3-4 Dental schools and they told me that as long as it is an accredited course then it is acceptable. The courses at Athabasca University are equivalent to any other university course other than you do it at your school and teach yourself. It is a great alternative especially when you are not able to attend school during these months...nothing more, nothing less..

Good luck!

this is purely for time/money management, not as a grade booster, the online courses are psychology and phsyics I for the summer, which would open up spring 07 for physiology instead of physics II and lessen the money needed for a summer dorm, making it more productive in review for the dat that same semester. orgo II physiology I algebra/trig biochem and orgo lab, all dat review, wasnt meaning for these online courses becuase theyre "easier"

anyhow i see band more as a class to show diversity and boost a transcript more than to boost a gpa, consdering a 4.0 in a 1 credit class means crap towards artifically boosting ur gpa, if i took all 400 level science courses, and i dont get into dental school, heaven forbid, id be in the same position as if i took "easy" classes, a physiology degree is still going to be utterly worthless whether i take histology or ecology

i mean, hell, ill already be done with all the prereq required for 95% of the dental schools out there (i dont ever plan on taking microbio) by the end of my soph year next year, im not allowed to stick in classes thatll help me be competetive, at least im not filling my scheldule with irrevelent random courses like ecology, geology, or some random clothes design course at 250 a credit hour

Most transcripsts don't specify if you took the course via normal lecture or online. So, unless it is an online university, the dental schools shouldn't know how you took the course.

As for this being the most competitive year ever, it doesn't seem to me that average numbers have really changed that much in the past three years. I know that we keep writing that it is getting more competitive and it certainly is more competitive now than it was, say, six years ago. But is there really reason to think that this year will be more competitive than last year? I don't think we should all start gettin all worried about the sky falling for this round. Just do our best to create as strong an application as possible.

unless you're pregnant and/or paraplegic, stop being lazy and get your a** off the couch and go to lecture.

one of the best post's i've read so far! ppl do talk a lot of @*#i on this site...and yea, averages tend to not change THAT drastically... i have a outline of average GPA. here are some #'s:
2001-2002: average overall 3.43
2003-2004: average overall 3.43
2004-2005: average overall 3.46

not a major change...

lol im amazed at how u project ur image onto me when u know nothing, from what ive picked up, im not the one who is lazy and failed 2 years of college, is dumb and earned a 2.7 on online courses, and is immature and find the passage "Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it." in the psalms humorous, seems like nothing has changed my friend, before finding faults in someone else u should first look within urself

oy vey...cant we all just get along?! as for online courses, my school offers them, and no, on your transcript it doesnt show up as an online course. shows up like any normal course you take where you attend lecture. AND before yall jump down my throat, the only online course ive ever taken was this semester- because its senior year, and i had a freshman history class left to take. SO not going to sit in class with the freshmans 😀

lol it took 16 posts to get a clear answer

ive thought about it but the career isnt lucrative as everyone makes it out to be. the increase in pay in medicine from dentistry doesnt offset the amount of additional work, stress, and the loss of those precious years of ur life. so far i have yet to see a career thats relatively easy to enter (none of that actor, basketball player bull) that combines the the kind of freedom and income that dentistry does. also it incorporates many aspects of business, my original naive highschool career path. minus those 1/500,000 people-get-in jobs, a dentist by far has the best job in america, its just luck that it hasnt gotten as much praise as medicine and therefore less competetive, hopefully thatll last for a couple more years
