I have a questions about the Navy annual training. I know we are required to have 45 days of annual training, but how does this scheduling work with school? We have summer classes, and we only have 1 week of break.

Thanks.

You can take what are called "School Orders" which essentially are orders that keep you in school doing your studies.

How about ODS school? I am assuming I won't be able to take off 5 weeks during school, so that means I have to complete it after graduation. Would this affect my 4-year contract and extend it?

No. ODS time counts as active duty time, and your time in the service is much more likely to be affected by your special pays contract than by ODS. Why not do it before you go to school, though?

Pretty sure if you wait until after graduation to do ODS that time doesn't count towards your 4 year commitment, but you will still get the active duty pay I believe. Also most people in the Navy don't get to do ODS before school starts. I wanted to but they wouldn't commission me until Aug 1st, even though I was awarded the scholarship in February. My buddy in the Army commissioned in August too though but was still able to do his training the summer before school started. Bad policy in my eyes since a lot of schools (like mine and OP) only give a 2-3 week break during summer so I'll have to wait until after graduation too.

ODS done after dental school counts as active duty service, whereas ODS before or during dental school counts as reserve, active duty for training (ADT) time.

And a good number of people actually do ODS before dental school starts.

Well I tried numerous times to do ODS before school starts and they wouldn't let me, I guess some may be able to but no one that I know of the past couple years. Just from what I've heard and read is that if you cannot do ODS before graduating that it will count as your final AT period. The handbook says this will delay starting your internship (obviously) so does your 4 year commitment not begin when you start your internship also?

No, you will get active duty orders to your first duty station with ODS as an intermediate activity. It will not be an AT period. It might delay your start at an AEGD/GPR or credentialing tour which may annoy the program director. Taking the June ODS course will negate this issue. The exception is if you are selected for specialty training to begin immediately following graduation - you will need to report likely by the beginning of July and will need to find time to do ODS before that.
