I'm just curious, cuz I have absolutely NO idea whatsoever what other schools do. Do you see patients from first year, practice physical exam, or work on standardized patients? I just don't find this discussed very much all ...

Our school has a year-long course called Doctoring.

1st semester we focus on taking histories and learning some screening tools. We learn Ped/Geriatric interview styles and then focus on screening for major problems: diabetes, alcohol abuse, weight loss, domestic violence, etc.

2nd semester we focus on the physical exam. Just starting this stuff.

Also, we have to shadow different specialites twice each semester. Then a preceptorship somewhere in our state for 3 days.

Feels like good prep.

Student Continuity Practice: Students are assigned to a primary care MD in private practice (peds, family or IM) and spend one afternoon per week seeing patients during years MSI-MSIII.

Principals of Clinical Medicine: Meet one afternoon per week during MSI and MSII. MSI: learn H&P skills, practice on patient instructors and a whole bunch of touchy-felly stuff. MSII: More advanced exam skills, focused H&P, acute care, rehab, hospice, home healthcare, AA meeting, skilled nursing facility visitations, etc. More practice with patient instructors. Some touchy-feely stuff, but not as much as MSI year.

We have a course called Clinical Medicine. We have lectures throughout the year en masse. We also have small group sessions, no more than 12 students, with a doctor where we practice history, BP etc. Also we have 16 required hours with a practicioner in one of the primary care fields where we observe, talk about how to deal with difficult patients, and take BP et al on actual patients in their offices. This course is continuous for us over all four years as well.

Ahh neat neat. So basically everyone's curriculum is the same haha. That has satisfied my curiousity ...

Intro to Clinical Medicine is an MSI course at my school. We are assigned our own preceptor with whom we spend 1 afternoon/week or every other week seeing patients.

In MSII we take Clinical Skills, which is one afternoon/week seeing patients and up to 2 additional afternoons in specialty sessions (peds, cards, etc) or small-group sessions where we work on honing our history-taking skills, generating DDx, etc. There are various Standardized Patient sessions during this year, too.

Clincal Skills- first semester we go a complete physical which meets 2 times a week for lab (4 hours total) and 3 hours for lecture.
The 2nd semester we have a class where we have to write a full H & P over a pretend pt. that has a dz. (which they assign to you). Then we have a class where we do practicals where we go in a draw one of the parts of a physical and perform in on your preceptor.

The MSII we shawdow a doc once every two weeks for an afternoon and where they have mock pt. come in and we have to do a full work up on them to figure out the problem.
