I've just started my D3 year, and my school has come up with a system for clinical requirements that, in my opinion, really stinks.
Basically, our grade for D3 clinic (73 semester hours) is based on 50% attendance and 50% production. Every procedure has a Service Unit value. To pass, you need 300 SU's, to get an A, you need 450. To give some examples, most fillings are worth 1.5-2 SUs, crowns are 4, molar endo is 4, and prophys are 2. The scale is not very equitably distributed. On top of that, we can only have about 30 patients and half of those are perio maintenance, so you get at most 8 SUs per year from them. Account for the no show factor and your lack of control over what patients you are assigned to manage and what procedures they need and it gets pretty frustrating. I feel like I have very little control over my grade. The admin claims that they have been running these SU's in the background for the last 5 classes, and that we should all be able to pass based on past numbers. We are the first year that it's actually being factored into the grade though.
At any rate, how does your school grade your D3 clinical time? I know there's got to be a better way out there.
