I’m currently a pain fellow and due to family constraints will not be able to move from my current location in the north east until July 2021 (23 months from now). I’m looking to move to a major metropolitan area in Texas. I would really like to start making some contact with groups in Texas, but I’m worried it’s too early and potential employers will laugh in my face for initiating contact so soon. Is this an unreasonable fear or should I start looking? I figure what’s the harm in looking early, but for some reason feel a little strange about it.

Thanks in advance!

Are you going to stay on faculty for a year? I think a big hospital system would be happy to discuss things with you around 18m from projected start...

Private practice 12m from start.

ASIPP is in Dallas next spring. Might be good to go to as a lot of Texas PP people may be there. Even if you aren't a big ASIPP fan, probably good for networking. Also I had a co-resident that had an agreement in place before he even matched into fellowship with a hospital system back where he was from in Ohio. So yeah, it is never too early.

Definitely not too early at all!! There are lots of doctors “thinking of expanding...but not for a year or so” and if you meet several of them you’re golden.
But don’t forget—everyone gets screwed in the beginning, and if you have a bad non compete you could get screwed for quite a long time.

A guy a year below me in residency had a job lined up before he even started fellowship, at least a year and a half out. Definitely not too early to start putting out feelers.

I cold-called and emailed when I was looking for a job. No one will laugh in your face. The worse that will happen is they will ignore you. 2021 is really far, by the time it rolls around you may not even want to work for that group anymore.

not too early. year pass by in my practice before i even know something has changed. insurance credentialing itself can take half a year. lots of groups are constantly looking for people, but cant get their act together to do the work to find someone.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I’ll start cold calling/emailing. Also plan on going to ASIPP. Thanks for the all the advice. Really appreciate it. Wish me luck!
