I guess this might warrant a response from aPD. I searched through the transfer threads but still could not figure out the exact details. If a resident has an open spot at another program and wishes to transfer mid year after the 45 day rule, does he/she get credit for the rotations completed so far? Or do you have to start from scratch and then graduate a few months late. Also I know that transferring mid year is a big pain for the program, is it even feasible with some notice to the PD?
I am asking this because I really would like to transfer and the program I want has an opening now. I would like to finish out my year but don't want to lose this opportunity either. So looking for some ideas before approaching the PD at the other program with the opening.

There isn't any simple answer.

Whether or not you get "credit" for your rotations depends on the PD. In general, if you completed the rotations satisfactorily, you should get credit. I would like to think that most PD's would do so. The problem arises if you leave the program suddenly because of an opening somewhere else. Some would consider this unprofessional behavior (I agree that if you don't give your program adequate notice to manage your exit, that's unprofessional). So if you had completed 3 months in my program but then leave suddenly, what do I do? Give you 3 months credit? or consider your unprofessional behavior and give you no credit?

If you get no credit, then yes you end up off cycle and graduate late.

Whether it's "feasible" or not is up to you and the PD. My personal feeling is that with enough notice (90 days at a minimum, 120 would be better) then it's fine. Others might argue that you signed a contract to work for 1 year, and should honor it.

what are the best resources to look for a pgy 2 opening say in january or december ( as i m offcycle ) ?
