I'm thinking about living an hour away from my school next year. Does anyone live that far away from school? Do you think I can afford to lose 2hrs a day (coming and going) from studying? I'm going into my D2 year.

I live 5-10 minutes away from school and I am really really glad about that. Unless you have a significant other that you live with you should try to move closer to your school. Consider how much you can study in 2 hours. That is a lot of time!!!

There is a guy in the DS2 class that I know lived in San Marcos, Texas during his first year. I don't know if he still lives there or not, but it is about a 45 minute commute each way. I guess it can be done, but I don't know that I would do it... especially as a second year (and since you haven't lived there yet), and knowing all the lab work I will be doing when the time comes.

I'll be in the same boat as the OP, and like Navy, I live on a lake. It is awesome for many reasons, but I am absolutely dreading the commute (1 hr). As a result, I will be listing my house next month in hopes of selling. I simply cannot see commuting for the next four years. Two hours on the road, 5 days/week....cost of gas....winter weather in Michigan...😱

20 minutes and it is almost too far for me....

I'll be living 3 miles away and I thought to myself, "Wow, that is FAR...I won't be able to walk to school..."

Actually, during my interview the interviewer was concerned that I would be commuting from home (from the San Jose area to San Fran) and told me point blank, "You know, when I went to this school I had a classmate who commuted an hour to school each day and an hour back. DON'T DO IT."

Although some people are incredible at managing their time, most of us need all the time we can get to study, relax, and do the things we need to stay sane. There's hardly enough time in the day as is.

I know a guy that lives about an hour and a half from dental school. He says he doesn't mind it at all and the reason he does it is because his wife has a job in the city where they live. He is not planning on specializing and says that he rarely misses a social gathering, so I'm not sure how much time he spends studying......

I liked a previous post that suggested driving 'the commute' a few days at the same time you would be driving in school and see what it is like. People often forget about how traffic, sun in your eyes, etc. can make a drive much less pleasant. You can also get a good idea on how much extra you'll be spending on gas.

The Rhode Islander in me won't allow me to live any further than 10 minutes from school. I don't do distance driving.

I now live 2500 miles away from my dental school. It's almost far enough, but I still have the occasional flashback

This is the way to go.

I walk 5 miles everyday to school, through the snow with no shoes.

2 hours a day x 5 days a week x 4 weeks a month x 9 months for D2 year
= 360 hours of just traveling (just my estimations)

You could have spent all that time doing something else, like studying and sleeping. You can't buy back time. I recommend staying closer to the school if you can...

I agree with those who say "closer is better." I'm 3.1 miles from my school, and I'm debating moving closer.

It's best if you can walk to school. I like knowing that the trip home is short after a long day. It just makes life a lot more convenient given the demands of school.

I live an about an hour away from school - it's worth it because it's a much more family-friendly area for my wife and kids, and we have a great deal on a townhouse. I'm absolutely sick of the commute after three years, though, and it does impact the amount of study time I have for sure (my family impacts it too!). I'm still able to do very well in school, although it requires sacrifices. If you've got good enough reasons, it might be worth it.

I agree with what was said above though - given the demands of school, you'll be much better off if you can walk to school.

10 minute walk for me. Couldn't imagine commuting - I feel like I don't have enough time as it is.

Haha -- reasonable question, NAVY DDS. I'm in Minnesota with no car... and walking to a bus in -30 degree winters to go to school or to get groceries is not very much fun! 🙂

Anyhow, I'm thinking I'll get a cheap car instead of moving.

i've been spoiled thus far. i'm not in dschool yet, but i've never lived more than 3 miles off campus. i live 1.53 miles off now (it's a nice run in the morning) so i don't know what i would do if i have to move to more than a ten minute drive to get to school. i used to have to go through 4 red lights, and that alone was enough to put me in a bad mood if i caught them all...haha...i could possibly make a 20-30 min drive everyday, but over that is just WAYYYYY too much. i value my time that i actually get to do nothing, and i sure as *&%# will not be spending that time in a car!!😎

I live less than a quarter of a mile from school. It takes me less than 5 minutes to walk to school, and that trip is bad enough during the winters here up north. If I could live in the school, I would. I believe there was a person in my school who commuted two hours each way to get to class due to family. I do not envy you commuters. 😀

Could anyone in SF give advice on commuting? Ofcourse I'm hoping to get a place within a mile or so from school. But if I can't, is it feasible to get a place anywhere within the city limits and use public transportation? Is a commute where you must transfer from a bus line to the muni, or between 2 muni lines, a bad idea?

Live as close to school as you can. You'll be studying late and won't it be nice to just roll out of bed and be in class in 10 minutes as oppose to 2 hours of driving? Also with gas at $3.50 to $4/gal- you may want to walk or bike. Public transit is good but takes a long time too.

I live about an hour drive from school, sometimes more when traffic is bad. I commute with my fiance so it is nice to have some guaranteed time together when we can just hang out, sing like idiots to the radio, etc. I lived in an apt about 1 mile from school first year through the middle of this (third) year and needed it that way...I could not have had that much commuting time those first two year with all the studying and lab work. This year it works out awesome, though and I love living away from the school. Next year we will probably find a place closer to school, but for now we will save some money for the wedding by living with our parents 🙂

zsy_lzy, walking 1.5 miles in winter in the city with traffic takes about 25 minutes (not bad). However, the bus system this close to the U of M is pretty good, with buses going every 15 minutes.

For example, check out the schedule for the 16. Remember, the U offers the U Pass, which is unlimited busing for $64 per semester. That's a fantastic deal (about 75% off bus fares).

I'm moving out of my current apt and I'm trying to figure out where to live next year. I currently live in a really nice area of town in the middle of all the action (shopping, restaurants, and bars). My building is pretty old and the management sucks. It's about 20 mins walking distance to the school.

I'm thinking of either moving 1 block from the dental school in a brand new building or in a new building downtown. The area around the dental school is a crappy area and it's not very accessible to any major transit lines except one that goes downtown. The downside to the building downtown is that it's a bit on the pricey side, but accessible to all the major lines and about 5 min bus ride to the school.

Is it better to live close in a crappy area or live the lavish city life?

PS: if I end up near school where parking is cheap, I'll be able to bring a car up for weekend snowboarding trips.
