I'm hoping to match GS in 28 days, so the wife and I are starting to look around at houses. What kind of range do you all put up with? Obviously the farther out the bigger and better stuff gets. Single people who live in an efficiency 8 steps from the hospital don't count. I know it's person/city dependent, but we live in a townhouse about 5 minutes from the hospital now, just curious what other residents in here do. Are there requirements to be allowed to take home call as a senior? What kind of commute gets annoying 2x day? What's safe to drive post call?

Thanks

We have 3 hospitals in my program, 50% of the time at our major one, 33% at the private affiliate, and like 16% at the va. I live 10 minutes from major hospital, 20 from affiliate, and like 15 from va. I liked the area to.

10-15 mins away is probably optimal, anywhere past 30min is stretching it. The problem times are when you need to get there for an emergency and driving home after a night of call.

I'm doing a GS rotation and I am commuting 45 mins each way for it. It sucks having to drive that far and it cuts into sleep. I'm at the hospital by 5:15-5:30a and done by 7-7:30p so that hour and a half would be great to have. The drive home after isn't so bad and it's a nice way to decompress. I'm gonna make sure I'm within 15-20 mins when I do residency.

I live downtown, 5 minutes from our main hospital during "surgeon's hours" commute times. About 10-15 mins away from the smaller community hospitals in town, which we visit on our community-based/private patient rotation.

While I would definitely recommend living no more than 20 minutes or so from the hospital you will be at most frequently, I also want to give a plug for choosing an area that you like. For me, my surroundings are important, especially with limited free time. For me, this means I want to be close to restaurants, parks, live music, etc. So while I could have a larger place for the amount of rent I pay (or possibly even buy a house) if I lived 20 minutes out, but I don't think I would like living in the suburbs. Others, especially those with kids, really want a house and a yard, etc, so they choose to live 15 minutes outside of downtown. You need to evaluate your own lifestyle preferences. You'll be in residency for a minimum of 5 years - that's a long time to rough it out in a place you dislike. Home, and the area around it, needs to be a place you enjoy and can find relaxation and restoration, whatever that means for you.

Good point. We had on campus housing at the "mothership" and I always felt sorry for those residents that chose to live there. Yes, they were close, but they were dreary, outdated and they seemed to spend less time exploring the community around the medical center.

WE had a 15 minute rule if you wanted to take call from home, otherwise you were expected to stay in house. The difference between being able to go home on call and being stuck in a hospital closet (aka call room) is huge.

I now live 4 minutes from the hospital and love it. I can go home at lunch and let the dog out!

I am about 15kms away from the hospital, but I can come within 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes about30 minutes due to traffic.
