I was wondering how often do applicants match into their top 3 neuro choices? I'm ranking 6 neuro programs but I would probably be not to happy under the top 2-3. I feel like I am a strong applicant (scores wise) and the interviews went well, but I just wanted to get an idea. My top two choices have 7 positions each, followed by the third that has 3 spots. Do people go far down their rank list? I wanted to also mention I'm an FMG and 2 out of 3 of the programs are community. Thanks! If mentioning stats/etc is necessary to get an idea you can let me know.

I was actually wondering the exact same question. The friends that I've talked to all seem to have matched in their top 3 choices (in other specialties)... but this is just anecdotal... The NRMP says that overall, including all specialties, 77% of AMGs match in their top 3 choices and 40% of independent applicants (including IMGs, AMGs who didn't match last year, etc) match in the top 3 choices. This will obviously vary a lot depending on the specialty.

I wonder what was the experience of neuro people in this forum who have gone through the match in previous years... How far down your list did you guys go??

The reality is that there are not enough spots for everyone's number 1 program. With that said, I know a couple of kids who match into their top program last year with scores of 230's- both were IMG from Caribbean's med schools and both match into good academic programs.

This year I was part of the interview committee. I can honestly tell you that once you are granted an interview, although important, numbers (step 1, 2 etc) are not what will get you ranked higher. What is really important is how you fit into the program. For example, during this season, we had a kid from a great med school with great scores and some pubs but was an ass. Not a single resident voted for him and was not even recommend to be ranked. Another kid did not get along with 2 current PG1's- this is important because these PG1's will be sharing call with the upcoming class- bottom line, he will not get ranked.

Every program has different ways of ranking people. In our program, once you are granted an interview, you are looked at equally, regardless if you are a US grad or an IMG. Although I wish to remain anonymous, I am currently in a top 25 program. The only thing you can do is do your best during your interviews and try to establish rapport with the residents- trust me, and I know other residents will agree with this- we know who is faking it and who is genuinely interested. Good luck with your top program. To some, it is better to go unmatched while others would prefer go anywhere….and thus, some people don't even rank programs where they are not willing to go.

I am not ranking 3 places that I interviewed at because I know I wouldn't be happy there and I'd rather go unmatched. There's no sense in being miserable for a few years. Worst case is you scramble or take another year and reapply, which are terrible options, but way better than being stuck in a residency that doesn't fit you, I would think.

Agreed!

Indeed, I actually did not ranked the entire state of NY....some places were in bad locations plus you get raped by taxes. It was important for me so I decided not to rank bout 8 programs, including cornell.

I heard this from many people on the interview trail, although, I didn't interview in New York at all.

I had a spousal veto from even applying to New York.
