how far is too far for in area emails

For example, if I am interviewing in michigan, would requesting an interview from a school in illinois or pennsylvannia or even new york be too far?

PA and NY are absolutely too far. Even Illinois is probably too far, but that might depend on what two schools you're looking at.

In the area emails are mainly for schools that are in the same city or very close. Like if you have an interview at Temple and you want to see if you can get an interview at Drexel. Same with NYC schools. Just because another school is also on the East coast doesn't mean you're "in the area."
 
On the other hand, my family lives in Michigan and I will be visiting for a while during the holidays. It would be very easy and take only a few hours for me to drive to U Chicago, Northwestern, Case Western, etc while I am in Michigan if I can be interviewed before Christmas or after New Years. I will definitely send some emails out since otherwise I will have to fly out from the East Coast and take additional time off work.
