Interesting read this morning over at the New York Times.

"Last year, I had a girl who wrote to me every day," recalled Monica Inzer, Hamilton's dean of admissions. "She'd send me e-mails; she'd send me letters; she had alums write to me. We all knew that this girl wanted us more than anyone else."

I know that this is about Undergrad admissions, but perhaps this is something to take to heart regarding med school admissions..

So my question is this: how far would you go to get off a waitlist?

That is undergrad admissions. I bet if you try it with a med school adcom you'd come off as a nut. Still, USnews claims someone wrote a poem on why they should be admitted to med school, and got in.

I think there is much to be said for sending one of those neck garlands so popular at Indian weddings, covered in 100 dollar bills, with the note--'to celebrate our coming happy union.'

I wanted to get off the waitlist sooooooooooooo bad that I withdrew.

I was accepted off the waitlist and going to that school next year. Was a pretty good feeling.

I sent a single heart-felt and personalized letter of intent to my top choice (where I am waitlisted), and I think that's really all anyone can do. I don't get this idea of writing or calling every week... that raises character issues in my mind. Besides, it must get very tiring for the student trying write an original letter every few days to basically say the exact same message.

I think this is school dependent... I was actually told by the admission office of one school I was waitlisted to write every single week to tell them I was still interested. It seemed like a lot of work and I withdrew. However, to get off Pitt's wait list I did send 2 updates and 2 LOI's. Nobody I know that has gotten off the Pitt list did not send at least one LOI

Do you have any doubt!?

Now that I think of it, probably not. It would be great if they published a book on the 'crazy pile'. If this book already exists, for goodness sakes LINK IT!!! 🙂

I'm declaring right now if I get an acceptance this cycle, I will do the lifetime donation on SDN 😡
