Hey guys I know this is silly but I am getting a bit nervous about getting into a MD/PhD program because of their typically low acceptance rates. I've got a 3.8 GPA and a 36 on my MCATs along with about a year and a half of research experience in a lab I work full time for now. I know my stats are looking good, but what other kinds of things do they look for in a typical applicant. Any info you could provide me with would be great!

thanks

Sounds to me like your app is pretty solid. You have the big three pretty much covered, though it would help to have more research experience and any abstracts/posters/pubs you can manage.

Otherwise, you'll need good letters of recommendation, essays, and a good interview. Some amount of volunteering or other ECs wouldn't hurt, and may help at a number of schools.

Good luck!

Here are some quick and dirty stats for last year's MD-PhD applicant pool: 1528 individuals applied to at least one MD-PhD program. 874 of these applicants were offered at least one MD-PhD interview. 545 interviewees received at least one MD-PhD acceptance. Accepted applicants are 36% of the nominal MD-PhD applicant pool and 62% of the interview pool.

You are on crack- those are great scores. Unless you just graduated from Pima Community College or have a felony conviction you'll get in somewhere.

Just be careful on the application process- apply to several schools!

This is great to hear the exact numbers. I've never seen these published before, is this only available to adcoms or is this data available from the AAMC?

Hey thanks guys always good to hear some assurance from other people heh. BTW I do have about half a year's worth of hospital volunteer experience and I was a department tutor at my university for approximately a year.
