How good are my chances?

Hi guys,

My science GPA is 3.5. I was wondering if I do well on the DAT (let say scores above 20s) how good would my chances be? Is my GPA going to hurt me?

I also have a low GPA and aiming for a 20+ score so I can get into schools like NYU, BU, Temple... but like someone told me.. its easier said than done. So study hard and get that score and you'll get in somewhere. Good luck!

You might as well not apply... you have no shot with that low gpa.

well a 3.5 is certainly not a low science GPA but also not a high one. My impression was that most competitive applicants have a GPA > 3.6.

I was told by me pre-health adviser that the avg gpa is around 3.7 but i just started looking into dentistry so idk maybe its lower. She told me its more competitive than med school because of far fewer schools. I hope the avg gpa is lower (sci and overall) because she got me really worried and now idk if should even consider applying till I do a masters program.

There are only 7 schools with an average cGPA > 3.7. There are only 13 schools with an average sGPA > 3.6

well looking at the profile of people who got in it looks like there is no specific guidelines. I have seen applicants with a sGPA of 3.7 who didn't get in and people with <3.5 who got in. So yeah it is a little bit confusing.

I don't know whats wrong with some prehealth advisors. There is no way that dental school is more competitive than medical school.

There are other factors like DAT, ECs, LORs, and PS. GPA is NOT everything.

There is typically a Gaussian distribution of GPAs for each entering class. You can look up the averages on the school websites or the ADEA guide.

Too many people ask what there chances are on SDN when they don't even have enough information for people to guide them. Sure, you say you have a ??.?? GPA, and assuming i get 20+...... Not everyone gets a 20+, it's not a cake walk, it's not guaranteed. Gather all your info at once before you ask these questions because vague "what are my chances" threads seem to clog up the forum. I'm all for helping, just come prepared... 🙂
