How good is SOMA for health insurance, I'm going to be moving around a lot 3rd adn 4th year and I hate BCBS since they don't always pay, even if its in the policy...I'm looking for a simple no hassle insurance policy that I can use all around the US, BCBSKC makes it difficult to see a Doctor ourside the KC, MO area like I tried to do when I went home for break...

Also, which do you feel is the best value...I'm fairly healthy with no serious past HX...

Any input would be greatly appreciated...

SOMA is crap insurance. I have used them for the past 2 years I have been a student, and the only reason is that the school policy is more $$ and not much better. It is basically only good for catastropic things. They don't cover much at all, and if you try calling to dispute something, you will have a better chance talking to a wall. I'm not kidding.

Look around-but as a student it will be hard to get decent insurance that won't drain your pocketbook unless you can be covered under someone else's (ie spouse). If you do find a better policy, please let me know-I would love to dump this insurance!!!!

SOMA sucks and will not cover anything!!

SOMA insurance is garbage, You would do better to save the money you would pay on the premium and use it for healthcare costs yourself. As a matter of fact, I had a situation that required some hospital time and they paid less to the hospital than I had payed in premiums for that year. Do not expect anything but a pain in the A$$ if you try to deal with these folks.

its a horrible insurance plan. Although, quite a bit cheaper than our schools. If your school requires insurance, and your a healthy person, go for it (thats why I took it), but you better not get sick or need ANYTHING because it doesnt cover anything.

Don't get any insurance that has "medical student" in its name.

My S/O has SOMA it sucks bad.

Can anyone recommend something other than BCBS that they had a good experience with? I mean that's almost affordable...around 100.00 a month...I was given quotes for 200-300.00 for BCBS and that was for the highest deductible...but I have no health problems...all the insurance companies seem like highway robbery...they take our money and don't do anything for us both young and older people...I was reading some other companies policies and they don't cover things that people should basically have a right too in order to prevent things that could increase the bill for them in the future...doesn't make sense at all...I should focus on COMLEX rather than think about this now I guess...one of my top options was soma, but I'll probably try another?

I would appreciate any insight as well. Does anyone know anything about the AMSA insurance? I don't know if it would be a waste of my time to follow-up with them. I spoke to an AMSA representative who told me pre-existing conditions aren't covered for a year. Ouch! If AMSA is decent and they cover some pre-existing conditions I'd be down. But insurance companies are out there to suck up your money regardless if your a student or the eldery. 😡 Does anyone else have independent insurance (i.e. not married) that has a decent premium and with only a $250-$500 deductible?

agree with the previous responses - especially if you (or your dependant) might be planning to have a baby (speaking from personal experience with currently > 15k of 'out of pocket' medical bills)...
