I am hoping to gain admission to medical schools now and become a physician (MD or DO). I have heard about grade replacement. Can anyone enlighten me on what it is and how it works ??

Also, most of my pre-med coursework are old (>10 yrs). I am wondering if med schools (MD/DO), in general, have any time limit on pre-med coursework. Do I need to retake all or some of the pre-med prereqs or I can use the science courses I have in pharmacy school (e.g. Biochemistry, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, etc.) to apply for med school ??

I would appreciate very much all info/tip/input/comment you can give me !!

Most if not all DO will accept them. Mine were taken 20+ years ago. No problem so far. MD schools vary, some no limit, some within last 6 years, etc.

I have a feeling that this will vary by school/state. I know Texas has a fresh start program whereby you can "start fresh" if it has been 10 years since you took prereq courses. Google will be your friend.

The rule of thumb is to retake all courses in which you earned a C or lower.

thank you for the info. That is very assuring and giving me a peace of mind. If you do not mind, could you share your stats (I guess you got accepted or are a med student already).

thanks. Do you know if pharmacy coursework would help my application at all ??

I have also heard that med schools only look at undergraduate coursework and not graduate grades (and pharmacy/PharmD is grad program). If that is true, it does not make sense to me though, esp. people can do post-bac or SMP to boost their premed grades/applications. Can you guys shed a light on this ??

It would definitely be considered as a part of your application. I don't know how all schools evaluate graduate grades, but I'm assuming it varies between schools. I think what they might mean is that they only use undergraduate courses to calculate your GPA.

PharmD really depends if it was part of Bachelors or Doctor without BS, etc. check out the Aacomas instructions pg 17. Professional grades don't count in DO app as they don't treat as Grad level. If your Pharm is a combo degree it may. My Optometry grades were not calculated in my DO app. MD app includes it as grad gpa. Also ask in the non-trad forum. There are quite a few pharm turned DO/MD in there.

thank you very much. I will post the same questions in the non-trad forum.

after reading the AACOMAS instruction, I think I got a clearer picture. In general, grad gpa will not be included in the calculation for DO school application but will prob still be looked at...
