I've read a few things about how difficult COMP is during the first two years and I wonder what is it that makes it so difficult? Med school is difficult, but what is it that makes COMP relatively difficult compared to the other schools.

I been mulling over which school to attend and have been thinking COMP would be a strong choice due to the strong 3rd and 4th year rotations - but HOW BAD are those first 2 years? UHS has Gensis 2000, AZCOM has a problem-based didatic curriculum..........what's COMP curriculum like, and again why is it the first two years are killer? Poor teachers? Bad grading policy? Bad student atmosphere? When on campus I was told the pass rate was in the low 90s and I am hearing that the first two years are extremely difficult at COMP - how is the pre-clinical education? Will I work my butt off and not even be prepared for the COMLEX (due to an inferior educational approach/poor teachers)?

I would appreciate any comment. Feel free to comment on MSUCOM, TUCOM, AZCOM, COMP, UHSCOM (I feel like I will be accepted, interviewed last week). If I am wrong about an observation please let me know, if I'm dead-on let me know, if I'm missing something important let me know...

I'm having trouble deciding between UHSCOM, COMP, AZCOM.

MSUCOM - great interview, nice admissions people, didn't see many students, too many students (as a university), too much for out-of-state.

TUCOM - great interview (go prepared, you do not want to be the worst in your group), Dr. Haight is nice, campus is ugly, a lot of older/non-trads, no ethernet, do rotations away from campus during 3rd & 4th year (positive or negative depending on you).

AZCOM - great interview, very friendly people, nice admissions people, great facilities, very very hot, great pre-clinical education.

COMP - so-so interview, secretary was really nice & helpful, campus looks like an outside mall (takes away from the "prestigious" feel you hope for), rotations are supposed to be top notch, 6 electives, bad complex I pass rate

UHSCOM - good interview, very friendly people, nice admissions poeple, very friendly campus, great pre-clinical eduation.

If anyone has questions about the application process/specific details about applying to medical school or about these specific schools PM me.

 Exactly. You're thoughts are right on about TUCOM. Enter Elysium...

Go to the ghetto that is COMP. It's awesome.🙂

Slickness,

Here I am!

🙄

I think the best thing to do in this situation (regarding all these schools) is to do a search on SDN. All of these great schools have been discussed a lot! Everyone has their own opinions about what place is the right fit for them.

As far as the schools that MOST people seem to be happy at I would say AZCOM and UHS-COM.

See, Slick, that's fair, right?

😉

Lo que sea.

For all of you who are wondering what that means...It's the Spanish equivalent to WHATEVER. 😉

I'm going to AZCOM...that might affect your decision neagtively.

XCanadianRagwee, are you from Baltimore? What school? I went to school over in Baltimore. You may affect me positively or negatively about AZCOM...time will see.

I do agree it seems most people are "happy" @ AZCOM and UHSCOM. I wonder just between the two - which has a better clinical /rotation program. UHSCOM has a lottery system for the 3rd & 4th year...but it seems that those who stay in Kansas City have a great place to do rotations. AZCOM starts your clinical experience from year 1. Both have 4 electives. It seems these electives are very important to obtaining a good residency....as you are more likely to obtain the residency of your choice if you do a rotation there (even more if you did it in the field you want)...and these electives give you that flexibility.

What I do know that the students who are at UHSCOM & AZCOM are the only students who went out of their way to say HI to me and make me feel welcome....I was VERY impressed with the friendly atmosphere.

Any more thoughts on COMP anyone? AZCOM or UHS for that matter?

My top three choices & my quick reasons:

AZCOM - great weather, great friendly students, great academic stats.

UHSCOM - great friendly students, excellent academic stats (apparantly slaughtered the national average on the complex on all sections)

COMP - location, location, location, great rotations. I have lots of friends in the area and this has sway, but I wonder if it makes it enough for it to be the right school for me.

If you have any thoughts please chim in.

The first 2 years of ANY medical school will suck. Bottomline. You will sit in class 8-5 every fricken day. You will study to 1-2 midnight every fricken day. You will be tested every fricken week. You will have very little time to yourself. Etc. etc. But when you get to 3rd year, life will be good. So until then, suffer like the rest of us.

😉

AZCOM: Lecture notes provided for most classes, attendance not manditory for most classes. They test the hell out of you at this school though.

As a side not when I interviewed there yesterday they had just received their match results for their rotations. About 87% of the class got their first choice on roatition sites.

I am partial to UHS. Besides the fact that most students are very successful there and they provide early clinical experiences, they have a variety of experiences for different specialties, like EM and sports med. It just depends on what school fits for you, UHS is the school for me. 🙂

I am a first year at AZCOM. Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have!
