Hey all!
I’ve seen some discussion about how difficult it is to establish residency in other states (MN), but I was wondering about NC specifically?
And, what are some good ways to prove that I plan on staying here after vet school?

Thanks!!

Hi! I established residency in NC within a year. I’m originally from Kansas and was living in NC part-time for my undergraduate degree, then moved to NC permanently after graduation.

The important thing is timing and evidence. You’ll want to move into a permanent address at least a year before you plan to APPLY to a program; so if you want to apply by September 2026, you will need to live here by September 2025. You will need a lease (or proof of ownership if you buy a residence) with your name on it, a NC driver’s license, and mail addressed to you in your home in NC. It’s best if you get your license and title of your car (if applicable) transferred to NC ASAP after moving. You establish residency through a third party service. Find more info here: NC RDS | Use residency determination to establish tuition and aid eligibility | NC Residency Determination Service

You can also establish residency after your first year at NC State if that’s your situation. One caveat is that you need to prove that the money you are using for vet school comes from NC and was taxed in NC. If you’ve been accepted to NC State, they have a lawyer that works for the vet school that can help you with all of this.
