Hi I'm a incoming freshman in college and want to know how hard is it to get an out of state acceptance to University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine? I really want to go to Hawaii!

I heard they have an out of state acceptance rate of 0.5%, I have absouly no ties to the state and have never visited Hawaii...what kind of preparation should I do?

I'm a Cali resident, White, and go to UC Berkeley...my friend says I have a better shot at Harvard med as an out of state...is being out of state a really big deal for many med schools?

Thank you for any replies!

I think your friend is right. The few out of state people that schools like Hawaii take are typically stronger applicants than the rest of their pool AND have very strong ties to the state ( grew up there etc. )

Hawaii is sick though. If you really wanna go there you could consider taking a year or two to do research there and establish residency. Although you should note that you would be giving up attending salary in opportunity cost each year you delay your application.

Edit: if you're a freshman, consider transferring there.

Yes. Taxpayers want docs who will practice in their state. After all, they're supplementing your tuition.

Why do you want to go there? Just for med school...or do you want to eventually live there for good?
