or any opt schol in general...besides the ones in the midwest/missouri...
do you think i have a chance

in gen chem i have a and b
in stats i have a

in the english req i have a b-
i have ap credit for bio
in human anatomy i have a c

in math i have a b+ b- and c

and i have been in a couple pre opt clubs and did a volunteer abroad thing related to optometry

Have you taken the OATs yet? I would check with the schools about AP credit counting for prereqs. Have you done any shadowing or opto related jobs? It's really tough to say how the adcoms will evaluate you. The schools you listed are very popular schools, so I imagine it is quite competitive.

thats a 2.82 roughly...

i still have physics, ochem, biochem, and microbio

yes i talked to scco and they said that they will take ap credit for bio as long as i take upper division bio at my university..which i am going to take. and no i havent taken the oats and i talked to scco about my extra curriculars and they said that they are fine...the only thing is i need to get a 3.00 prereq and i wouild be in...

i mention scco b/c thats the closest to me

Well it depends on your interview too, I should think. You might want to get some more shadowing time in there. Your numbers may qualify you for interview at scco, but remember that there are going to be many other applicants and you need to outperform them In some way to get in, not just make the bare minimum. This is true for all schools, especially the ones you listed. They all get like...at least 600 applicants/yr and very limited seats. So I might recommend doing some more shadowing and getting more experience if that's what you're low on (I'm not sure, you didn't say much about having shadowed). Especially if your gpa is very close to 3.0.

I just read your gpa post. My gpa at time of application was 2.89 while working at least 1 part time job, I had a few EC but like 2.5 years of solid opto experience and scco didn't even give me an interview. So I guess at the very least Jack that gpa up to 3.0. The other school may or may not have a 3.0 min gpa rule (like hard and fast rule), but even if they don't, tha majority of the applcants likely will have a 3.0+ gpa, so you'll need to make yourself marketable from some other aspect if your gpa isn't as good.

yeah i know that scco will not give anyone a interview if they absolutley do not have a 3.0 or above...they said that once you pass the academic round, then your grades are out of picture for interivew.
yes i have a lot of shadowing exp. i also worked in a opthamology center giving eye/hearing exams to local preschoolers and elemetnary kids

Then all you have to worry about is the rest of your classes and your OAT! I would prooobably wait until you're at least 1 semester done with OChem to take it. It's too confusing to be able to even partially understand it if you try to learn it on your own. That's the part that owned me everytime...and physics, but that's because I was lazy about memorizing equations.

yes i was planning on completing 2 qtrs of ochem then taking the oats...
and i like physics actually.
do you think i can get in ANYWHERE 🙁(

Well, if I could, I'm sure you can, if you spin it right, you know what I mean? My Overall GPA = 2.89 and Pre-req GPA according to SCO was a cold 2.69. Buuuuuuut here I am! c/o 2014.

I worked through school and have worked optometry the last half of undergrad until now (I'm 1 year graduated) as well as working part time for my university from my 2nd year until my graduation. I worked enough to make a lot of money that I apparently have none of now. I think it's all hanging in my closet. I have a BS in Genetics and I think that was one interesting thing about my application. I did stuff with the MCB (molec. cell bio) Club for a couple years but nothing super big. No eye screenings or anything. I had a 330TS/330AA on my oats, which isn't high, but rather the low end of "ok" I think.

What I think the adcomms might have liked about me was that I put a lot of thought into what I was going to do. I certainly had enough time to think about it. Like, I've been working towards it since 2007 and I know what I want to do when I get my OD and I sounded very sure of myself (at least I think I did). Don't be meek. Know what you want and go out and get it. My GPA sucked, but that's why I'm in school doing the post-bac classes I should be studying for finals tomorrow but I'm here instead. Way to stay focused (any LC ppl here?).

Anyways, I'm known for my long winded posts. I'll finish up. You sound like you have at least a year to go. Make it count and REALLY power through it. Finish strong, like as many A's as you can. "C's get degrees" was something I was grateful for until I was filling out applications and realized "****, but they don't go to optometry school." CONTINUE with the optometry experience. Don't make it look like once you got your 30 hours out of the way you kind of dropped it. Other than blowing away your OATs, that's probably the best you could do for yourself at this time. If admission doesn't happen the first time around, so be it, but you'll know what you'll have to do to make sure you get in next time. PM me if you like, I don't love calculus and my exam is multiple choice (...who does that?), distract me? 😛

Mewcakes thanks for being so helpful with the info! I applied to sco too and am from louisiana and they have seats open for us. Andy grades follow the same story as your but I got thrown on the wailist. I was thinking that maybe that's the reason but the only different thing between us is all the work u did at an optometrists office. It's good to know that I still have a chance maybe next year...but reallyyyyyyyy wanna go this year! Le sighhh

Contrary to my profile, my location isn't REALLY mewing at cakes. Though I like doing that, I'm really from California. I'm not sure what that means for admissions. I had heard that SCO has x seats reserved for students from certain states and the rest is, I assume, free for all. I'm not sure if very few CA applicants go to SCO because it's far or because they don't get in. I think it might be because it's far. 😛 And think of it this way, you're not necessarily done yet. I know they are letting ppl in off the waitlist all the time. Mr. Robertson told me that if it's anything like last year, they could be letting anywhere from 15 to 20 people in off the waitlist. If your status is ranked, you're probably in pretty good shape. If not, you still never know what can happen. They were telling me stories of people getting accepted off the waitlist as late as July.

Haha this waiting us killing me! Haha and yeah the only school Ive been ranked for Portland. I would loveeeeee to get in any of the three I'm waiting on...pco, sco, and puco. Lemme know if u hear word on a class size so far or anything! Thanks dude!
