Alot of schools play the good-clincal-program card to those applicants who don't want to specialize, and it's hard to single out the real good ones.

Not at all. You don't have to go out and recruit or anything if that's what you mean (But you're allowed to if you want)

From what I understand, you get assigned a pool of patients by your group practice administrator during 4th quarter of your first year (4-10 depending on what they need). These are "your" patients, for whom you will complete all of their treatment. As you complete treatment plans, you're assigned more patients (variable again upon the extent of what they need, but most 3rd years end up treating between 30-60 patients plus those on rotation).

If you're looking for a good "clinical program" if such a thing exists, I wouldn't worry so much about how easy it is to get patients. I'd take a look at what the school actually lets you do. Are they sending all your molar endos and retreats to the endo department? Are you getting to keep esthetic cases and full mouth rehabs or are they bouncing to prosth? Perio surgeries?

I can tell you this, the only residency we have on site at Pacific is ortho, and there's not a dental school in the country that's going to let you do that. Well, besides maybe invisalign. Which you can do. Here.

Armorshell, could you tell me how you figured out your loans when you got to Pacific. Does the Financial Advisment office just give you a list of providers to choose from or do you have to find them yourself? Can you borrow as much money as you want?
At the interview there I guess I should have asked these questions. Thanks

They'll give you a list with all of the relevant benefits and options. All you have to do, at a minimum, is be able to sign your name twice 🙂

Wait so you only treat patients for a quarter year?? Was that a typo or is that just a special portion of the curriculum?

That was an epic typo. Should have read first year

I'm so glad we don't have to recruit patients. If you are not from the area I don't even know how you would do it. Solicit door to door? I came to dental school so that I wouldn't have to do jobs like that.

yeah...It's nice we won't have to recruit. The Group Practice Administrator I have supposedly (according to the 2nd and 3rd years who work with him now) has a stack of patient files on his desk that have yet to be assigned to students in case students need patients with particular types of work for requirements on top of the work he or she gets from the patients he or she is assigned....very nice to know that.

It is funny to see that some people in our class have already got some of the footwork done for recruiting patients on their own though. Ever noticed some of the first years in our class that already have business cards made out for themselves.

Makes me smile
