How hard is orgo really?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rofl at all these SDNers trying to summarize how hard they think organic is....

It depends entirety on the professor you get OP. worthless trying to ask SDNers...

As opposed to what? asking the misc?

If you are truly concerned about it then you may try hunting an introductory class in bio and organic chem. At my school it is called "intro to organic and biochemical reactions and relationships", which (obviously) is an introductory course that can boost your confidence. The pre-reqs are just gen chem 1&2.

Orgo is easy if you focus on understanding the concepts.Problem solving skills can be built by working through synthesis problems.

No, they aren't accurate. Orgo can vary a lot from professor to professor. There is no general rule to how hard orgo can be. Are you even in college yet?

I had similar worries before taking ochem. I was especially nervous because so many people had to retake the class, many students more than once. I did not want to do that so I made sure to set up a good combination of classes to make sure I could dedicate the time and energy to Ochem. I also payed for a tutor to help me one or two hours a week for the first two months of class. This was very helpful as the student had previously had the professor and knew what was important for me to know. Also, some of the 3D concepts were hard for me to grasp, but with my tutor I was able to understand the material much more quickly.

Also he had old quizzes and tests which were very helpful. Thankfully the professor was okay with students using previously printed exams to study with.

Not as hard as P Chem.
Ditto.

I took both OChem I and II with a tough professor and managed to do well and enjoy the class. It certainly helped that my professor was constantly available to answer questions and I had a 25-person class, but I think what was most important was taking my time on the reading, going over my notes after class, and having a strategy for preparing for exams. For me, this strategy was creating multiple study sheets with relevant, basic mechanisms and informations for each test. Really helpful to review for the final, as well.

Both semesters of Orgo were my favorite science classes, by far... you can liken the reaction mechanisms almost to a puzzle or game, which made it "fun" in a school context.

Yeah... now, tell me, is there ONE THING in life for which this isn't the case? You make no sense tbh.

On the national level of hardness it is measured at 6.37/10. does that make you feel better OP?

Teacher, Teacher, Teacher.

Huge factor.

Had a straight Russian prof. Brilliant and best teacher I have encountered, although the accent was tough at times. Be prepared to actually "study"

Guess you'll have to find out one way or another...

Like everyone said, it depends on the school, professor, TA, etc. I never considered orgo to be hard, I liked it a hell of a lot more than gen chem and maybe that's why I didn't mind studying so hard for it. I'm too lazy to look through all the other posts, but I'm pretty sure someone mentioned Organic Chemistry as a Second Language, which you should get--no question about it. There's probably pdfs available online if for some reason you can't afford it.

I found Orgo very easy. Probably the easiest premed requirement behind Physics.

The difficulty of OChem is overhyped, but it definitely is a fairly time consuming class regardless of which professor you have. The best advice is to talk to upperclassmen at your university.

What schools (for those who have taken ochem) has good professors for this particular subject? I know it depends on the school and professor..but it never was specified......

Depends on professor and student. I've found that most people whom like math hate orgo. Go figure? I took Ochem1 and 2 plus the lab in two 5week summer courses. Didn't score less than a 95 in either class. If I had a different teacher it may have been different...

Depends. I liked Orgo better than Gen Chem, but Orgo is pretty difficult but manageable. You'll survive as long as you study and pay attention. Unless you have a really high IQ and can cram exams and get A's on all of them, study study study. I had a really tough teacher 2nd semester. We were his only Orgo 2 class. His exams were brutal, more application. Maybe a few people got As/A-. But I learned a lot. First semester, teacher wasn't that great. Grades were half and half since half the class went to other professors. I was one who stayed and got an A-. So, in all, you'll live though it. You'll feel stressed and feel like pulling your hair out ( I found the orgo tumblr site entertaining to read) but then, you'll be SO GLAD IT'S OVER!
