So how hard is the QR section and do most people spend alot of time going over math before they take the dat. Do schools look at it as being super important?? Or what is a good avg. score?

Pretty much no schools look at QR. (unless the shcool has cutoffs)
I think it denpends on whether you have been strong in math or not. According to the SDN, I would say above ~18 would be considered high enough.

The actual questions aren't hard, but it's the limited time that makes QR difficult. I'm sure if I spent some time on it, it would have been easier though( I did no practice for it:laugh:) ...

Based on the July 06 to June 07 DAT statistics the lowest mean is in the QR section and it stands at 16.58. The remaining stats (bio, gc, org) are usually about 1 point higher than the QR. The RC section stands at 18.94. (See the post on the DAT harder/easier-The myth revisited)

John9192 is correct- aside from schools who severely limit their applicant pool with cut-offs that apply to QR also, most schools don't rely on QR to be an accurate indicator. I know for a fact they they are viewing the QR very lightly this year due to the "irregular and sporadic" scores that have come in. There has been a below-average QR trend among students with 20+ on every other section. To still accept these desirable applicants many schools are not applying QR to their cutoffs- UCSF is a good example of this (and who wouldn't want to go there?)- they have a 17 minimum on all scores but are not applying that this year to QR. I'm sorry to the 7 of you out there who got a normal QR test and scored a 20+ , or those who have older QR scores (before May) but that same score on any other section is gonna mean a lot more. They have good reason to do this. You only need basic math skills in dental school. I saw a personal statement come in where the applicant said, "Having attained three gold certificates in the National Mathematics Challenge, I have the academic mettle to handle this demanding course" and the reader actually laughed out loud because the applicant thought that his math skills could save his horrible science grades. So no worries to all of you who do well in all sections but QR.

Everyone that I know personally who has taken the DAT this summer got a QR score which was 2-4 points lower than all of their other scores. The general population is not worse at math than the other sections- it seems that QR is a terrible indicator this year with regards to preparation for dental school! The DAT will start to lose credibility if they don't fix this by next year. I read peoples' postings who were math majors and they know that they found screwy problems on QR! That blew me away when I first read it but now it seems to be a trend. You have to miss 1/2 to get a 16, but 15-18 is common this year- that's just whacked! Imagine what your score would be if you misseed half of the G Chem questions!

I got a 16 on QR, and at my NYU interview my interviewer told me that the QR scores for this cycle have been so low that they were giving them very little weight. 👍

Everyone with a low QR needs to read this and feel better about their app.

i have been using destroyer for math and i dont it really helps. the questions are pretty simple. am i the only one here who thinks like me about destroyer QR? bio and chem is something else. this books is good in these 3 areas but math? i dont know. kaplan math exams are crazy. never seen anything like that before. I hope i get to see questions for math like the ones that i see in destroyer!!! is the dat math similar to the kaplan questions or destroyer? does anyone know?
