ThisPublications will not make up for a low GPA or MCAT. However, they are a great way to make the research you do seem meaningful and productive. You were also first author so that is a huge plus as well. It will certainly help distinguish you, but it will not make up for anything. Best of luck on the MCAT.

Thank you! I have a follow up question..
I know EC's aren't as important as gpa & mcat and can't make up for them - but I've been scoring 516s-518s on AAMC practice exams and (hopefully) will perform similarly on the actual mcat. Would that help with a low (not lethal but low) sgpa?
Also, is a low sgpa due to As & Bs in all of them viewed less poorly than a low sgpa from like, Cs & Ds?
A publication is a publication and an admirable feat at that.Quick question for Goro! How does Adcom differ basic research publication and clinic publication? I personally think basic research publication(especially aiming at Nature, Cells, etc) is way more difficult to obtain than clinic publication(Case report, data analysis).
How low are we talking?
Even a first author Cell paper is not going to salvage a low sgpa like that.3.55/3.25 cgpa/sgpa so def very low for MD but I got 2 more semesters of classes and can bring it up some, at least. One B- is my lowest grade & had a particularly bad semester last spring due to family stuff
