My question is how helpful is getting a masters degree in let's say biology (and do well) to help with a semi low gpa in undergrad (3.3-3.4)? Is it helpful ? Would it help compensate for undergrad level low grades? Also does it matter if I pursue a masters degree versus an SMP? Thanks

MD schools don't count research MS degree GPAs because of the grade inflation. DO schools will count them, and at least you have a skills learned for a fallback career.

But SMP, while riskier, is n audition for med school and if you ace it, and the MCAT, it will be the backdoor to MD schools that reward reinvention.

It seems to be somewhat school-dependent. I was advised by two md schools that a hard science masters plus good mcat would help my application. I did both of these things and got into a few great md schools. I was scared shltless when I kept reading here that md schools think masters degrees are worthless. It's not a hard and fast rule. That said, an smp may be an overall greater help to your app, albeit an expensive one.

I don't think anyone says they are worthless... just not the best think to do if you are solely looking for GPA repair. Research is always good.

Mine was done mostly for gpa repair as I have lots of research experience outside of it... And I think most people here, even goro above, says that they don't count. I think mine counted somewhat, although it's always hard to say exactly what made you successful vs not.

For me, the free cost of the masters was why I chose it, along with being able to continue my research position while doing it. I think it worked out the best for me.
