How I Got a 100.35% in Orgo II

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is no curve for my organic chemistry class. A 94 and above is an A. So if you had a 93.99999999, you will get an A- no matter what. Secondly, there was extra credit. But it was in the form of exams. She only gave extra credit when you answered a questions that only like five people in the entire class could answer. This was her form of giving you props for answering a seemingly impossible question. She liked putting in wtf is this sh** questions to see who knew what is going on and rewarded you with extra credit and/or would approach you to see if you wanted to join her research team or persuade you to become a chemistry or biochem major. The extra credit was maybe an additional 1 or 2 points on your grade. For many people, the final is what screwed them over. I know the average for the final exam last semester was in the high 40s and the average for our final this semester was a 58. She did not curve the final at all. So you could literally go from a A to an A- or even a B+ if you bombed it badly (which many people did)

Clearly you've never been to a state school.

Clearly lol. Maybe it's because I was an engineer, but almost all of my classes had a ton of extra credit or a huge curve. My biochemical engineering class had extracredit that added 80 points to one of your test grades. Yes you read that right, 80.

Haha what. I think the worst I've ever seen was in my AP physics class in high school, the average on each test was curved to an 85, so a couple people got like 200% in the course, whereas I got like a 52 on a test and it curved to an A. (Also I wasn't the best student in HS)

That's great if that approach worked for you, but in reality, the only way to learn the material is to be devoted to it and work as many problems as you can. Orgo is extremely tricky sometimes because you have to apply all the material that you learn in many different ways. It is rather different from bio, since bio is most of the time just straight memorizing. I did will well in both orgo classes, but probably wouldve failed had I not done every single problem.

Everyone's professor is different, especially in a class like organic chem where the overall approach to learning it is decided upon the instructor. You probably had an easy professor lol

my Orgo class was hell, and I'm pretty sure just learning chapter 1 would have been sufficient for idk, the first two lectures maybe. all schools/profs are different. can't give advice based on your class and expect it to work for everyone.

I think I got a B (can't really remember... shows how important it is). Now I go to a top 20 med school. Enjoy your 100+ percents, people... or do yourselves a favor and go to a party or two. :naughty:

Lol I think u guys are jelly of OP so you're saying his orgo was too easy because he got over 100%.. Maybe the class was hard as hell and there was a little inflation, but if he got over 100% there, he'd probably still get an A ... Orgo varies by TEACHER , probably not as much by school.

No. Grades are determined by a curve. The competition setting the curve varies significantly by school.

It seems as if grading standards vary so much by school that undergraduate gpa is almost an entirely meaningless number. Unless someone has like a 3.2 or lower, which is piss poor regardless of the school you attend.

Thought you were going to say, "took free video courses over the summer."

People on this site like to throw out Top X number everywhere. What is the point?

Unless you're going to the likes of Harvard, Johns Hopkins, or Stanford (top 3 and completely arbitrary cut off), it doesn't really matter.

You just go to med school.

So many people on this site seem excessively preoccupied with prestige, when medicine is the field where prestige arguably matters the least.

But Stanford is only top 3 as of this year...

I don't even understand this post. It's significant in the context of dbeast's post because he's referring to undergrad performance in relation to his successful matriculation to a school that, by virtue of its ranking, is likely also selective / competitive.

In any case, prestige isn't irrelevant.

It was in response to the general prestige obsessiveness of SDN. Not every post has to be directly related to responding to the OP.

As for the bolded, aside from academics, prestige seems to matter very little if not at all in the actual practice of medicine. I don't even know where my doctor graduated med school. But people on here are constantly name dropping "Top 10, 20, etc" to brag.

As an aside, I don't feel like getting into a pointless argument with a virtual person on the internet. I am just offering an opinion.

I mean I agree, some people overemphasize it, and in the context of just wanting to practice in the community it's probably unimportant, but that's only one context in which prestige can be considered. Just saying.

Not wanting to further continue your nice hijack of the thread, but Top 20 deserves its recognition regardless of the prevalent phrase that "all medical schools are created equal and will teach you the same material". It's pretty self-explanatory as to why that is.

I think the issue is how to choose those top schools. Usnews research ranking doesn't give you the whole picture although it is suggestive.

 It had to be done. Let the flame war (caused by a completely unwanted thread hijack) begin.

:flame:

In all seriousness, I'll be very interested to see opposing views in this matter (but please don't hijack this thread further).

I studied my butt off and did a bajillion problems for reactions to get that 97 on my test.
Not doing practice problems? At least not good advice for me...:scared:

Right.... says the guy who brought up this topic in the first place.

Well the good news is I'm no longer in your Ignore List!! :soexcited:

At least for now... :scared:

"Prestige doesn't matter", says the guy who is only using his AMCAS fee waiver to apply to top schools because they would be the only ones worth not getting instate tuition for.

Also the guy who wasn't going to include his race in his application, but decided to because it would give him a much more realistic chance at top schools.

I never, ever call anyone out, especially not on an anonymous internet forum, but I seem to keep finding you specifically preaching all of these self righteous things that you don't actually follow or believe for yourself. I don't know if you just think these are the right things to say or what, but just calling it how I see it. I'm sure you will end up responding with something like "way to attack someone maliciously on the internet" or some other defensive response, or block me altogether, but I'm not trying to offend you or attack you. Just saying, practice what you preach.

2.74 sGPA?

Yup, that was my sGPA before caring. Was a very poor student my first couple years. If only that was at all relevant to you being the most pretentious person on this forum. I think GPA correlates more to work ethic than intelligence, but if that helps you sleep at night by all means. Way to prove my point exactly. You'll be a great doctor some day LOL.

And to further make you look pretentious and fake, not that most don't already know that, here you go.

Wow dude. Completely uncalled for and it's disgusting.

1. You hijack this thread to meaninglessly rant about Top 20 schools.
2. You harshly mock people with unfortunate circumstances just to boast your elitism on SDN.

This response makes you look really insecure.

Careful now. Dbate will add you in his prized Ignore List for criticizing him (not that it would matter, but still...)

Very well said. 👍:highfive:

My rule of thumb is if you aren't jelly of dbeast you aren't paying attention.

dbeast is jelly of me.

You guys are teh best. :naughty:

dbate, I've become a fan of your posts recently. I don't think I've ever seen you agree with anybody, ever. Kind of impressed. Invoking Thumper's law, btw.

Also, sorry for bumping this thread. 🙁

dbate = debate = never agree with anyone and reject the facts = hijack a boring thread into a volatile debate = :corny:

Will dbeast take dbate??? 😱

I'm gonna put my stamp of approval on this thread.😎

Also, prestige>all

Ha. Wish I had time to get involved in internet arguments. If dbate (or anybody, for that matter) wants to lay into me about something, go ahead. I probably won't respond and it might make you feel better. 😛

You are stupid for your opinion and I hope you feel bad. I will be expecting your prompt response.

That school is full of weirdos.

EDIT: @sliceofbread 👍

EDIT #2: I have to go study. I apologize if I don't respond to your insults. Stay gold, ponyboy. 🙂

Drat. You nicely intercepted my flame into water... I will defeat you dbeast!

hahaha thanks for the support all 👍

I mean I'm not sure what insulting people on the internet does for your self esteem, but hey, do what you gotta do man. Get that frustration out. I'm happy with not stressing the online world and enjoying the real world. The girls in this real world are much more fun. 😉
