How important are interviews? Are you most likely to get in if you are invited for an interview? Of course....assuming that you don't screw up big time..

That's a very good thread that Doc put together, definetly worth a read.

You're not necessarily a shoe in if you get an interview, but browsing through at the ADEA guide to dental schools, the average seemed to be that dental schools give 5-7 times the number of seats they have in interviews, and then assuming that a number of the people accepted could be accepted at multiple schools, once you get an interview, and simply based on statistics, you would have possibly a 1/4-1/6 chance of being accepted. So there is still competition going on, and as Doc's thread points out, the DS's do consider the interview to be very important.

Hope that helped, and good luck! Interviews may seem stressful, but after your first one, they're really not that bad, the schools are just trying to get to know you.

nope, no assumptions there. There is no such thing as you granted interview- you are shoe in. Even UOP that gave in the past 97% acceptance rate after interviews may or may not do it this year.
Overall there are 3 invites per one seat. Acceptances given 1.5-1.7-2 per seat depending on the school. Higher priced private schools will give slightly more acceptances as they know people will go the instate schools for cheaper tuition so turnover is more. So at least 1 out 3 is not receiving acceptance after interview.
Also remember schools do not have to wait till Dec 1 to send you rejection letter after interview.... some schools have done that in the past real fast...

yeah it's never safe to assume that you're in just bc you have interviews.

had 2 interviews last year at my state schools but got waitlisted in both and didn't get in.

have 2 interviews coming up this year, and im hoping i'll land at least 5-7 in order to have at least 1 school out of them..

he lphiewok, what do you think went wrong?

but in general, I feel that most candidates would have decent interview answers, are polite, etc so what exactly is it that gets someone in and gets someone rejected?

Very different from school to school (AWESOME Link from Doc👍)

I agree, in most cases people are ready with good answers, polite etc...
What happens after interview that adcom goes second round over files. Some schools have point system where you are granted certain points for each of your stats and certain number for interview and people who gets above criteria receives acceptance. Some schools will place very high value on numbers/DAT,GPA/ only and some will allocate up to 40% to your PS, EC, and interview results. Some schools try to gauge you if you actually interested in the school and likely to come to school if acceptance send your way. The last one is criteria that some schools will place higher value and some schools schools will not.
So in my opinion schools repeat same process all over again after interview, just with a smaller group of candidates. Very few people will get rejected based on their interview performance only. Mostly once again, numbers will come into play, and to certain degree depending on the school your PC, EC, LOE and interview performance.

oh dont say that about UOP!!! I turned down my dental school acceptance last year just to wait for UOP as their waitlister. If I dont get into UOP this year, I am REALLY gonna kick myself in the ballz.
