How important are thank you notes?

Lather up.

Probably depends on the program and specialty. I doubt it's an app killer at most places, but it obviously can only hurt you.

many believe it to be common courtesy.

I know, I do feel bad about not sending them, just haven't done it yet. And then there is the question of who to send them to (which has been discussed here), just the PD? The Chair? Everyone who interviewed you? The goal is to get them out this week . . .

I had more than one program specifically tell me that they check to see if people send thank you notes. It could just be a check box on their list. I applied for gen surg, and it certainly could be different for other specialties.

I sent them to PD's and to the people who interviewed me. I tried to get them all out within a few days of the interview since they probably forget who we are once the next group of applicants show up lol.

I only emailed people I interviewed with and occasionally PDs/coordinators if there was any significant interaction or if they had to do any special planning for my interview. My general rule was also to email within 48 hours, though I think you could probably go up to a week and be fine. In reality, it seems that many (most?) interviewers fill out their eval of you relatively quickly so I don't think the notes affect you that much... I mainly sent them out of professional courtesy.

Honestly, it's not going to change much. I didn't send any out and don't plan to.

I'm in the didn't do it camp. . .

I am terrible with writing things like that and anything I did put down would sound corny and generic.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
You are my number 1
Am I yours too?

Didn't send any out because I'm a procrastinator.

Matched my #1 derm and #1 TY programs.

That said, it is courteous to send them.
