How important is an Official Letterhead for a LoR?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If a writer can't produce one, is it better for the applicant to look for another writer?

Good question. I wondered the same thing. I feel as if most qualified letter writers you ask would know that they need to put it on one. With all the other facets about your letters, it sucks to make it another thing to mention (especially if you think you might come off as ridiculous... since they likely know this is obvious).

Totally honestly though.... most people in academia and most physicians know and will have it on letterhead.

Many schools specifically said on their website that they expect an LOR to have letterhead, title of the letter writer (professor, doctor), and a hand-written signature.
If no letterhead, you are at risk of delayed of LOR processing or the school wouldn't count that LOR at extreme measure.
To be safe, I recommend you call the school to see if they are okay to accept it.

MCW refused to accept one letter of mine that wasn't on official letterhead. A whole bunch of other schools accepted it just fine. But there are some sticklers out there, so beware.
