ERAS never asks for your class rank, but it asks for your step scores and transcripts. I've found class rank important for AOA and graduating with honors.
My step scores were good but my class rank was average - I didn't release it and it didn't come up on interview trail. i interviewed at mostly mid to upper tier programs.

I don't know if there is a set standard but it was not on my MSPE/Dean's letter nor any of my friends from various schools. It seems the consensus is that class rank doesn't matter but AOA does so it indirectly matters. If you're a DO then it doesn't matter at all.
For the most part, AOA will provide them with that information (including junior vs senior AOA).
My MSPE did mention my high rank, which was noted by a couple "top" PDs on my interview trail.

There's a very good chance that the approximate class rank was in your and your friends' MSPEs. They use certain words to describe you and those words place you in a rank category.
