How important is hs performance?

I noticed many schools require applicants to send them their SAT score and some even ask for honors received in high school. How important is it?

It is not important. If you have a good college record, but your HS record is bad...don't worry about it.

I know a person who graduated medical school and had dropped out of HS. He got a GED and then went to CC.

There is guy in my class who's mother had to call the school several times a day to make sure he was there. He skipped so much they almost kicked him out. I know another guy who graduated HS with below a 2.0 and got into OD school.

If you have a good college record, don't worry about it.

Well, what if you have a great H.S. record (me for example 4.9 rank #3), but a 2.9 college gpa? Will this help my case? Just like some students decide to buckle down once they get in college, it can go the other way. Besides in my situation, I was a biology major trying to be too involved with everything ranging from marching band for 4 years, sorority, and SGA.

I really don't think HS performance will help. I'm not trying to insult you, but who cares about HS. In my HS we had 3 students ranked number 1. Two of them took every honors course and AP class offered and still maintained a 4.0 (the highest we could get). The other one never took honors classes (except english) and no AP classes. She filled her senior year with Home Economics (cooking) and Art I for seniors, yet she was still honored the same as the other two.

What I'm trying to say is, anyone can do well in HS, but can you cut it in college? My GPA wasn't much higher than yours, so I'm not saying your GPA is bad or that you can't handle college. What I am saying is college is the proving grounds, HS is...HS.

I'm sorry if this post seems harsh, but I believe HS performance has no influence on how well you will do in grad. school. That is what the committee will be looking at, "Will this person be success in OD school?"


But I also want to point out that a 2.9 is not going to keep you out of school. If you have a good OAT (310-320+) and experence/shaddowing with some OD's, you'll be fine.

I agree that they would obviously look more closely at your college grades. I actually hope that my HS grades are taken into consideration. I got honors in high school and hope they take that into consideration when looking at my college GPA which is a 2.8. Hopefully the OAT can help me out.

it probably matters in terms of long term records of good grades.. or else dramatic improvement(if you didnt do so great in hs but worked harder in college and your grades improved) i dont feel like they want to see you do worse as time goes on... as for your college gpa; i know that you need at least a 3.0 to apply to berkeley... hopefully you can raise it up a little bit by next year? i think its most important to look at improvement over time... my first semester in college i got an f in a class but by my last semester i was getting on the deans list... i think they care a lot more about improving grades as your classes get tougher...

HS marks dont really mean that much at all. In high school it is so easy to cheat and bring in notes to ace all tests without even studying for an hour. Whereas, in college, you'll be monitored much more vigorously. Therefore, HS really doesn't mean much in terms of dealing with a more intensified and monitored method of study.
