How important is it to apply by sept 15?

Hi there. Im an img, and im starting to doubt that im going to make it by the sept 15th deadline. How much will my chances be affected if i applied in october instead? Sorry, this is prolly a basic question, but im starting to really freak out and i thought id ask u guys. Thanks in advance.

Probably depends a little on the field. At any rate, applying late doesn't help you but there certainly is a likelihood that it may hurt you. Considering that you may have a knock against you being an IMG, I would try to move heaven and earth to try to get a solid, completed application as close to Sept 15 as possible. Keep in mind that you don't necessarily need all your supporting documents (ie. letters of rec) in at that time.

Also, this may be better discussed in the ERAS/NRMP forum.

don't know what it's like for IMGs, but here we are told to apply on opening day if at all possible.

Yeah. Thats what i was afraid of. Earlist i can apply is a few days late. I got swamped with research and coursework so I need more time to study for my step 1 and 2 ck than I thought.

Hopefully, i would like to apply for Peds or IM but it doesnt really matter, and Im not too picky about which program or state either.

I was just wondering if it is worth it (i.e there is still a reasonable chance of acceptance) to keep trying for this year, or if i should just forget about 2014 and try for next year instead?

Why can't you submit it on Sept 15? The app opens in the summer and it really only takes a couple hours to fill it out..

I will be taking step 1 on august 28. Thats whats limiting me right now. Taking it any earlier would prolly compromise my score. So, id be applying like three days late if the score came out on time.

Sept 15th is the deadline for IMGs if you want to match.

You don't need to have the the Step 1 score to be able to submit. My advice is to just eat the 2-4 hours it takes to fill out ERAS and do it. It's worth losing sleep over. When you get your scores you can just send them independently. The expectation isn't that your application is complete day 1...just that you submit a working application.

Ok, i will. Thanks for your help.

certain specialties will start sending out interviews within two days of applications being received. pediatrics definitely does that, i believe internal medicine and family are very early as well. other specialties, like em, derm, ortho, etc are much later in the game (after dean's letter). talk to people that applied last year in the specialty you want (or read the forum's interviews thread) to find out when you should expect to hear things.
