How Important Is Life Experience?

From what I've gathered, I think it's very important. That's not to say that one can't get into a stellar program with good grades, scores, and recommendations. But, I think life experience certainly adds a lot to an application. And, contrapositively (?), I think it can certainly help somebody lacking in grades and scores get into a good program.
