How important is radiology-specific research for DR and potentially the IR residency?

I expect to be graduating after the IR residency is its own separate pathway. I have a little ways to go before choosing a specialty, but I was just curious so I could figure out what sort of projects I should get involved with this summer.

Do DR or IR programs essentially require/strongly prefer rads research (such as the competitive surgical fields or rad onc), or is it more of a field where any research is a plus?

I think IR research will definitely be a plus in the new residency. I think it is going to be pretty competitive since there are only a handful of programs that will be ready by 2016

Thank you. Yeah I assume that as you go after more competitive programs you need more and more to stick out.

That certainly does seem to be the case. I'm interested in a range of semi-related fields like DR, IR, Rad Onc, and Vascular Surgery. I know they each have several unique properties so i'm just trying to figure out what sort of research could help me learn more about the subject material while also giving me a boost if it came to me applying to any of those fields. I was hoping that some research could be a bit broader and applied to multiple fields. I.e. rad onc research that focuses on imaging could still be relevant while applying to DR/IR, IR research relating to vasculature could still be relevant to VS, etc.
