How important is research for matching IM residencies? And is M3 too late to start

Hello everyone. I'm starting my M2 year right now. I have had a heck of a time finding a research project. I waited a few months into my m1 year to begin the search and then COVID struck. Since then I have gotten ghosted by a few projects and nothing has panned out. If I am unable to find a project until my M3 year, is that too late to really matter? And how much does research really matter any way?

Depends on what you’re shooting for. The tippy top programs, absolutely.

You can definitely match both community and academic programs without it

Do you by any chance know how are posters looked at ? I don’t think I’ll get anything published (not yet anyway), but I do have 3-5 poster presentations on different research initiatives .

I think good Steps + AOA + good clinical grades matter far more for top IM. I dont think research is necessary
Well, they do, but most of the applicants they interview have those credentials. Step 1 going P/F is another factor. Gotta set yourself apart somehow

I think school name and AOA are going to play a huge role so i dont see why research would matter especially since its known people drastically exaggerate their research profiles to max out the "pub" count

Oh it definitely will, which is why p/f step concerned me in the first place

Not all schools have AOA though

IM still has PCP focus and a lot of IM research focuses on fellowship stuff, so its hard to see IM being research heavy tbh. I think clinical grades + Step 2 + letters will play a good role for a lot of IM programs.

Where are you getting this from? It’s important and always been important for top IM unless you already go to a top school. There’s plenty of research opportunities, can even do it in one of the sub specialties.
