I'm working as a part-time scribe rn and I was thinking of working as a part-time research intern at a biotech company.

The job description says that I can participate in semi-independent product research and development efforts. Interns will play a key role as members of project teams in research, development, and manufacturing that complement their college curricula with relevant hands-on experience."

Does this sound worth it? bc I don't have much research experience.
If you are interested in research, and have not had a previous experience to get your feet wet in research, this may be a good opportunity. Be aware that at most biotech companies, rules will be stringent especially in the way of research as they have specific deadlines and goals to meet with their research and in most times, will be about optimization of current techniques, protocols.

It's good to add research to your app....IF AND ONLY IF you have already gotten enough clinical and non-clinical volunteering hours to be competitive. I

If you have the hours, then yes, adding research will make you more competitive, but having a ton of research won't make up for a mediocre number of volunteer hours.

What counts as good volunteer hours? I know many people have a couple thousand hours but I just want to know what is a "mediocre" and what is a "good" amount of hours. Also thank you for your reply!
> 150 hours each for clinical exposure and nonclinical volunteering should be baseline.

> 250 is really really good.

wow I'm kind of surprised that it is way smaller than I expected.. Then what is the point of ppl doing thousand hours of volunteering? don't take me wrong tho I know lots of ppl volunteer not just for their resumes, but I was just wondering why people volunteer that much. (cuz couple thousand hours are A LOT of dedication and commitment)
They love what they do and do what they love.

Also some people become a lot more numbers hungry in the pre Med application process. They think “more is better” but that isn’t always the case if you can’t describe in detail why you committed to things for so long.

Agree. Quality>quantity

You should be able to have a good conversation with the interviewer about your activity.
