How Important Is Research?

So I have a year off before dental school and I'm thinking of getting into research. Not really sure if research is my thing, but I'm thinking it'll give me something to do and might help if I want to specialize later... will it? And is there any specific type of research I should be doing?

that question comes up a lot. really, it depends on the program. some programs don't care. some programs just want to know that you did some kind of research, even if it was insignificant. some programs drool over applicants who have published and presented.

certainly it can't hurt.
