how important is shadowing if you want to do clinical research?

How important is shadowing if you plan on getting an MD to do clinical research? Would working with a PI who's an MD be ok in this case?

I say no. Research with an MD does not equal spending a day with a clinical MD seeing what their job is like. After all that is the whole point to shadowing!

I don't think what you'd want in that situation would be 'shadowing' really. Contact your local hospital's research department and see if you can get in as a volunteer research assistant. Generally they're always looking for help. (read: unpaid slave labor)
