how important is the PAT

i took my DAT in april and my PAT wasn't too good:

PAT : 17
QR : 19
RC : 21
OC : 22
GC : 23
Bio : 24
TS : 23
AA : 22

I have sent my application about a month ago. Since then i went to a pre-health advisor. She told me that i probably won't make the first cut in most schools i have applied to, since my PAT and QR are below 20. Will dental scholls hold my PAT score against me? I know i applied too late but what are my chances of getting accepted for 2007 ?

your sciences are straight up nasty. if a school cuts you because of a 19 in QR then they are crazy. and isn't that still in the 85th percentile or so? may be even higher. and it's all dependent on the school. some place higher emphasis on QR and RC, others don't.

i think your advisor might be mental. i'm assuming you've got decent grades, and with that maybe you're a slight underdog since it's late in the cycle, but your bound for a few interviews. i would think worst case you might be waitlisted. have faith in yourself. those are some sick scores!

Don't worry - your PAT is low but i doubt they will hit you too hard on the QR - some schools don't even look at it twice. I had a low QR and had no problems. Good luck.

Dental schools wanna see that you are a solid hard working student. One mark in this section or that makes no difference. With scores like those your set to get into the school of your choice. The schools understand the pressure of the exam and they arent gonna grill you about not scoring a 20 in every section. dont worry about a thing

Ur PAT score is 13 points less than my future PAT score, so retake it.

cavitron, if you take a look at the predenal forums, there seems to be less emphasis being placed on the PAT in recent years, especially this year. There are TONS of applicants with PAT's of 17-18 who have awesome scores on the rest of the exam (just like you) who are getting interviews to all sorts of schools. Don't stress dude, and if in doubt call up the schools and see what they think.


General trend of emphasis seems to be:


TS > RC > PAT > QR

for some schools (i.e. UoP), and


TS > PAT > RC > QR

for others. Either way, you should be fine.

those are some sweet scores bro! Honestly, although i have a pretty high PAT score, i think when it comes to most schools...I think its more about your TS and RC score. a good PAT score will only help you look better, but in no way can it compensate for a bad TS...likewise a good TS (like yours 👍 ) will make up for your average PAT score. look for a poster named In Her Drawer (very cool guy), i think his interview record will put your concerns at ease 😉

In Her Drawer is insane...is there any place that guy hasn't been interviewed? His GPA is pretty stellar though, and his DAT is pretty solid so he definitely deserves it

they all look at the PAT and have cut offs for it, but from what we've been seeing here on sdn, as long as you have a 19 or 20 it seems you're good to go. They seem to place more emphasis on RC and TS, since those are good indicators of how you'll do on the boards, whereas as long as you don't bomb the PAT, they'll know you have a good enough perceptual sense to not fail out of dental school

if U want to get into UOP, ur PAT DOOOESSS MAATTEEERRR! It's the very first thing they look at when they look at ur DAT score. (+ RC)
If u don't, other school don't mind it As Much! If u have a good GPA, u r pretty much fine.

First off i want to thank eveyone for your inputs. this really helps. Since i just found out that my application was mailed out on Oct 20, i take it that i won't be looking at an interview until 2007. so i have a long wait ahead of me. God i hope i get in. I have been working as a assistant for a year now, the work was fun but the pay sucks and i am only doing this so they know that i am committed to dentistry. in additioin i have volunteered for more than a year before i worked. Again thanks for all of your comments.
