What do you guys think? Is it something that could make or break your application?

Do you think if your gpa is on the low side (not too low, mind you) a great personal statement will save you. Conversely, will a bad personal statement with decent gpa and dat kill your chances?

I don't personally think it would make or break you. They won't even look at your PS if you don't make their GPA/DAT requirements. The only way I think it helps is if ADCOM is deciding between a few relatively similar applicants. I could be wrong about the PS impact, but I verified with 2 schools that if you don't make their stats standard, they don't bother even reading your PS.

It is important. Spend exctly 80% of the time you spent studying for the DAT on writing your personal statement.

😉 He didn't ask if it was important. He asked if it would make or break you. You have to make it to the point where they review it first. That's all I'm saying. If you pass that point, then and only then it will be a determining factor.

This may be a common answer, but it depends on the school. I personally think my PS is the main reason I got into the school I did. To be safe, spend a good amount of time on it and DO NOT half-@$$ it. It can only help to be thorough with the entire application. That's my two cents.

Although it really depends from school to school,
if we are talking about the rough average , this is how they weigh them:


1. DAT score = 40%
2. GPA = 40%
3. Interview = 13%
4. Personal Statement and all the others = 7%

You may not want to believe me... and there are always exceptions..
but this is what it is on AVERAGE.

Your personal statement is what differentiates you from all of the rest assuming you write a good one that is uniquely you. No matter how good your grades and DAT score are there are at least 100 more out there who are as good or better. It lets the adcom relate to you. It must be different than everyone else. It puts a personality next to the rest of the numbers. It is important.
